Array If going after it worked the whole damned game, why give it up when the whole thing is on the line?Dungy’s heeding S.O.L.’s advice and now the Colts are bringing it again. It’s fitting the D put them in position to control this game as they were villified at the end of the season for giving up something like 300 yards a game on the ground. Well, shit, the game’s already over. And there’s Dominick Rhodes putting the ol’ exclamation point on the whole shebang.

-ne So, back in October……I was 8 mos pregnant driving from CT back to Boston with the ‘lil man (then16 mos) in the backseat. When I got home, I filled out the form to request a hearing in hopes of getting the fine reduced — I was going too fast — but this penalty is a bit excessive.Well, I got my court date — it was set for January 4th. I assumed that they’d simply issue me a bill and I’d get stuck paying the damn ticket.Instead, I got a letter with a new date and a threat to issue a warrant for my arrest if I didn’t show.

In order to prepare for Jack’s travels to Guantanamo Bay, we thought it might be helpful to provide a little background. The first segment, posted previously, will provide a brief oversight about GTMO, where it is located, and how the U.S. acquired it in the first place. The second segment, posted previously, will focus upon the Naval Base itself. This posting will provide some information regarding the detention camp that is the topic of much of the debate in Washington DC as we speak. Jack has not had the chance to verify all of the information supplied by Wikipedia. So, you will need to cross reference yourself. However, it should provide a good starting part and overview.According to Wikipedia:Guantánamo Bay detainment camp, serving as a joint military prison and interrogation center under the leadership of Joint Task Force Guantanamo (JTF-GTMO), has occupied a portion of the United States Navy’s base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba since 2002.[1] The prison holds people suspected by the Executive branch of the U.S. government of being al-Qaeda and Taliban operatives, along with some people no longer considered suspects who are being held pending relocation elsewhere. The prisoners were captured in Afghanistan and elsewhere around the world. The detainment areas consist of three camps in the base: Camp Delta (which includes Camp Echo), Camp Iguana, and the now-closed Camp X-Ray. The facility is often referred to as Guantanamo, Gitmo (derived from the abbreviation GTMO ), or Camp X-Ray.[2]The camp has drawn strong criticism both in the U.S. and world-wide for its detainment of prisoners without trial, and allegations of torture. The detainees held by the United States were classified as enemy combatants. The U.S. administration had claimed that they were not entitled to the protections of the Geneva Convention, but the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against this interpretation on June 19, 2006. Following this, on July 7, 2006 the Department of Defense issued an internal memo stating that prisoners will in the future be entitled to protection under the Geneva Conventions.[3][4][5]On September 6, 2006, President Bush announced that fourteen suspected terrorists are to be transferred to the Guantanamo Bay detainment camp and admitted that these suspects have been held in CIA black sites. These people include Khalid Sheik Mohammed, believed to be the No. 3 al-Qaida leader before he was captured in Pakistan in 2003; Ramzi Binalshibh, an alleged would-be Sept. 11, 2001, hijacker; and Abu Zubaydah, who was believed to be a link between Osama bin Laden and many al-Qaida cells before he was also captured in Pakistan, in March 2002.[6]None of the 14 top figures transferred to Guantanamo from CIA custody had been charged until September 11, 2006.[7]HistoryIn the last quarter of the 20th century, the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base was used to house Cuban and Haitian refugees intercepted on the high seas. In the early 1990s, it held refugees who fled Haiti after military forces overthrew democratically elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. These refugees were held in a detainment area called Camp Bulkeley until United States District Court Judge Sterling Johnson Jr. declared the camp unconstitutional on 8 June 1993. The last Haitian migrants departed Guantánamo on 1 November 1995.The Migrant Operations Center on Guantánamo typically keeps fewer than 30 people interdicted at sea in the Caribbean region. On June 16, 2005, the United States Department of Defense announced that a unit of defense contractor Halliburton will build a new 0 million detention facility and security perimeter around the base.StatisticsAlso see List of Detainees. On September 22, 2004 ten prisoners were brought from Afghanistan. A total of 242 detainees had been moved out of Guantánamo as of July 20, 2005, including 173 that were released, and 69 transferred to the governments of other countries, according to the United States Department of Defense.[8]As of November 7, 2005, 358 of the 505 detainees then held at Guantánamo Bay had had Administrative Review Board hearings, according to a November 12, 2005, report by the Wall Street Journal. Of these, 3 percent were granted and awaiting release, 20 percent were to be transferred, 37 percent were to be further detained at Guantánamo, and no decision had been made in 40 percent of the cases. Of the 505 detainees, 100 or more are from Saudi Arabia, about 80 from Yemen, about 65 from Pakistan, about 50 from Afghanistan, two from Syria and one from Australia. A Camp Delta recreation and exercise area at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. The detention block is shown with sunshades drawn on December 3, 2002.From 2002 to 2006 there have been several hunger strikes at Guantánamo Bay, with up to 200 participants according to some reports.[9] Numerous participants were being force-fed through a feeding tube when their health and lives became in danger. The Australian reports that as of May 30, 2006, the number of detainees on hunger strike is 75.[10]FacilitiesThis article or section does not cite its references or sources. You can help Wikipedia by introducing appropriate citations.Camp Delta composed of detention camps 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and Camp Echo, is a 612-unit detention center built between February 27 and mid-April 2002. Most of the security force there is U.S. Army military police, and U.S. Navy Master-at Arms. Camp Echo, part of the Camp Delta compound, is a detention center where pre-commissions are held — its detainees may talk privately to lawyers. Camp Iguana a smaller, low-security compound, located about a kilometer from the main prison compound. In 2002 and 2003, it housed three detainees who were under age 16, and was closed when they were flown home in January 2004. The compound was reopened in mid-2005 to house some of the 38 detainees who were determined by the Combatant Status Review Tribunals not to actually be illegal combatants. Those who could not safely be repatriated to their home country were moved to Camp Iguana. Camp X-Ray was a temporary detention facility, closed on April 29, 2002, and its prisoners transferred to Camp Delta. But the term Camp X-Ray is sometimes still used as a synonym for the entire facility where suspected (and formerly mistakenly suspected) Al Qaeda and Taliban illegal combatants are detained. ControversyActions of the U.S. GovernmentThe status of this prison, above political beliefs, is not clear and may be against Human Rights and democratic ethics and laws, although U.S. courts have partially accepted the status of the prison as existing outside many of the U.S. laws, with the caveat that additional rights be provided regarding due process. In June 2006, the U.S. Supreme Court further restricted the Bush administration’s use of military tribunals to try the detainees. The Executive branch of the U.S. government has classified the detainees in Camp X-Ray as enemy combatants, rather than prisoners of war (POWs), which they claim means that they do not have to be conferred the rights granted to POWs under the Geneva Conventions. The U.S. government justifies this designation by claiming that they do not have the status of either regular soldiers nor that of guerrillas, and they are not part of a regular army or militia. In July 2003, about 680 alleged Taliban members and suspected Al-Qaeda terrorists from 42 different countries were incarcerated there. None have been allowed to meet with attorneys. On April 23, 2003, the U.S. military reported that three of the Afghan war prisoners held at Camp Delta had been identified as juveniles, were separated from the adult prisoners, and moved to markedly better conditions at Camp Iguana. Civil rights lawyer Clive Stafford Smith wrote an article where he cited reports of a further dozen minors detained in the adult portion of the prison. Smith asserted that there were twenty or more minors detained in Guantanamo. When the DoD released what it called its final list of all the detainees who had been held in military custody at Guantanamo there were dozens of detainess who would have been minors when captured, who were housed in the adult portion of the prison, in violation of international law.Main article: minors detained in the global war on terrorOn July 23, 2003, U.S. Major General Geoffrey Miller said that three-quarters of the roughly 660 detainees had confessed to some involvement in terrorism. Many have informed about friends and colleagues. According to Miller, the confessions were acquired through rewards that included extended recreation time, extra food rations to keep in their cells, or a move to the prison’s medium-security facility. On June 12, 2006, Sen Arlen Specter stated to CNN that the arrests of most of the roughly 500 prisoners held there were based on the flimsiest sort of hearsay.[11]Conditions at the campThis article or section does not cite its references or sources. You can help Wikipedia by introducing appropriate citations. The neutrality of this article or section may be compromised by weasel words. You can help Wikipedia by removing weasel words. Physical conditions for detainees at Camp Delta meet basic standards for maintaining health[citation needed]. Prisoners are held in small mesh-sided cells with little privacy, and lights are kept on day and night. Detainees are said to have rations similar to those of American forces, with consideration for Muslim dietary needs. James Yee, a Muslim chaplain from the United States Army, provided religious services, but has now resigned after unproven allegations were brought against him by the United States, following his tour of duty at Guantánamo Bay. These charges include sedition, aiding the enemy, espionage — although it was never declared on whose behalf, and failure to obey a general order. He was then transferred to a United States Navy brig in Charleston, South Carolina. Later, the charges were dropped. He states that he resigned because no apology was given, nor was there an acknowledgement of error by the United States.[citation needed] Demonstration against what is done in Guantanamo Bay detention center, Washington D.C.Detainees are kept in isolation most of the day, are blindfolded when moving into Camp Delta and from place to place within the camp, and forbidden to talk in groups of more than three. American doctrine in dealing with prisoners of war state that isolation and silence are effective means in breaking down the will to resist interrogation. There have been allegations of torture, including sleep deprivation, the use of so-called truth drugs, beatings, locking in confined and cold cells, and being forced to maintain uncomfortable postures. It has been alleged that SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape) program’s chief psychologist, Colonel Morgan Banks, issued guidance in early 2003 for the behavioral science consultants who helped to devise Guantánamo’s interrogation strategy. SERE is a program based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.[citation needed]In April 2006 it was discovered that several detainees had managed to secretly grow vegetables from seeds garnered from their meals, creating a makeshift garden in violation of camp regulations.[12]CriticismsThe use of Guantánamo Bay as a military prison has drawn fire from human rights organizations and other critics, who cite reports that detainees have been tortured [13] or otherwise poorly treated. Supporters of the detention argue that trial review of detentions has never been afforded to prisoners of war, and that it is reasonable for enemy combatants to be detained until the cessation of hostilities. However, the detainees’ status as potential or active terrorists, and the lack of any ratified treaties regarding treatment of captured terrorists, makes the situation particularly complicated. The Bush administration argued that the Third Geneva Convention does not apply to perceived Al Qaeda or Taliban fighters, since the Geneva convention only applies to uniformed soldiers of a recognized government.[citation needed] Critics of U.S. policy say the government has violated the Conventions in attempting to create a distinction between ‘prisoners of war’ and ‘illegal combatants’.[14] A U.S. district court partially agreed with the Bush administration, finding that the Geneva Conventions apply to Taliban fighters, but not to Al Qaeda terrorists.[15]Amnesty International and the United Nations have called the situation a human rights scandal in a series of reports.[16]Member states of the European Union and the Organization of American States, as well as non-governmental organizations such as Amnesty International have protested the legal status and physical condition of detainees at Guantánamo. Courts in the United States and the United Kingdom have been approached by relatives and friends of detainees to request a legal determination favorable to detainees. The human rights organization Human Rights Watch has criticized the Bush administration over this designation in its 2003 world report, stating: Washington has ignored human rights standards in its own treatment of terrorism suspects. It has refused to apply the Geneva Conventions to prisoners of war from Afghanistan, and has misused the designation of illegal combatant to apply to criminal suspects on U.S. soil.On May 25, 2005, Amnesty International released its annual report calling the facility the gulag of our times, even using the expression The Gulag Archipelago to design to the whole of the black sites:Guantánamo has become the gulag of our times, entrenching the notion that people can be detained without any recourse to the law. If Guantánamo evokes images of Soviet repression, ghost detaineeslink

One of the leading laptop and desktop PC vendors, Acer has still hold a strong position in Vietnam where it has been holding a pick in the laptop market over the year. It holds the 41% of the market share of laptop sold ever in Vietnam. Moreover, at present the rate is more lucrative. Its present market share is 60%. Acer bosses think that this success came through the competitive price of the Acer laptop. To continue this success rate, Acer is planning to introduce nine new models of laptop in the Vietnam market. I am quoting some information regarding the new laptops in Vietnam from an article: “On Monday, it already launched the Veriton 5800 with 256 megabytes of internal memory and an 80 gigabyte hard drive, plus a 15 monitor at a cost of US99.The prices of laptops using AMD chip range from US00 to US,600 each and the prices of laptops using dual core chip of Intel range from US,500 to US,100 each.link

catherine daly writes that human events has come up with a list of the Ten Most Harmful Books of the 19th and 20th Centuries. Appropriately, The Communist Manifesto, by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, earned the highest aggregate score and the No. The Communist ManifestoAuthors: Karl Marx and Freidrich EngelsPublication date: 1848Score: 74Summary: Marx and Engels, born in Germany in 1818 and 1820, respectively, were the intellectual godfathers of communism. Engels was the original limousine leftist: A wealthy textile heir, he financed Marx for much of his life. nevermind the fact that in spite of whatever support he got from engels, marx and his family lived in grinding poverty all his life. Quotations from Chairman MaoAuthor: Mao ZedongPublication date: 1966Score: 38Summary: Mao, who died in 1976, was the leader of the Red Army in the fight for control of China against the anti-Communist forces of Chiang Kai-shek before, during and after World War II. The Kinsey ReportAuthor: Alfred KinseyPublication date: 1948Score: 37Summary: Alfred Kinsey was a zoologist at Indiana University who, in 1948, published a study called Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, commonly known as The Kinsey Report. The 1953 book also included reports of sexual activity involving girls younger than age 4, and suggested that sex between adults and children could be beneficial.”what to give a scientific gloss to the normalization of promiscuity and deviancy really means is to study an entirely natural and vital aspect of human behavior objectively and without the prudish morality that despises and represses sexual feelings and activities. Das KapitalAuthor: Karl MarxPublication date: 1867-1894Score: 31 Summary: Marx died after publishing a first volume of this massive book, after which his benefactor Engels edited and published two additional volumes that Marx had drafted. Das Kapital forces the round peg of capitalism into the square hole of Marx’s materialistic theory of history, portraying capitalism as an ugly phase in the development of human society in which capitalists inevitably and amorally exploit labor by paying the cheapest possible wages to earn the greatest possible profits. He could not have predicted 21st Century America: a free, affluent society based on capitalism and representative government that people the world over envy and seek to emulate.again i love how engels is to blame for doing what he wants with his money. marx was a miserable failure at predicting the world’s future (who ever succeeds?) but he surely called capitalism on its bluff. The Feminine MystiqueAuthor: Betty FriedanPublication date: 1963Score: 30Summary: In The Feminine Mystique, Betty Friedan, born in 1921, disparaged traditional stay-at-home motherhood as life in “a comfortable concentration camp”–a role that degraded women and denied them true fulfillment in life. As David Horowitz wrote in a review for Salon.com of Betty Friedan and the Making of the Feminine Mystique by Daniel Horowitz (no relation to David): The author documents that “Friedan was from her college days, and until her mid-30s, a Stalinist Marxist, the political intimate of the leaders of America’s Cold War fifth column and for a time even the lover of a young Communist physicist working on atomic bomb projects in Berkeley’s radiation lab with J.

“The Lord Be With You…Even When He’s Not”Good Friday 2006Expanded version of a message preached at a Community Good Friday serviceNorth Central Pastor’s Cluster, Fresno CaliforniaQualifier: I never type out manuscripts for sermons, I go from brief scribbled cryptic notes; if anything. So I have tried to write in somewhat oral style; as if I had preached this whole thing (Right! In the seven minutes I was allotted as the third of three preachers preaching through Psalm 22 that day!)Dave Wainscott—————————————————————————————–There was a church that was not very liturgically oriented; in fact they were decidedly “low-church.” So the pastor wanted to teach his flock a bit of the richness of the liturgy tradition. He figured he’d start them out with a “win-win” that would be easy; the classic responsive that begins with the leader saying:“The Lord be with you.”You know the response:“And also with you.”And the pastor thought he’d have the congregation practice the responsive for several weeks, and then officially inaugurate it on Easter; a high attendance Sunday with lots of guests. So every week they walked through it:“Now when I say, ‘The Lord be with you,’ remember that you say And also with you.’” Let’s practice…”They practiced. They were primed. Pumped. Throughout the countdown weeks of Lent, they became quite prepared. Then came the big Sunday; Easter in all its glory. Lots of guests; an air of expectancy in the room; especially among the well-trained saints knowing they were about ready to show off what they had been practicing. So the pastor stepped up to the pulpit with a knowing smile. But he noticed that something was wrong with the microphone. So before he realized it, he said aloud just that:“There is something wrong with this microphone.”Well, the congregation was so primed and practiced that they immediately shot back, before they realized it, with one loud and clear voice:“And also with you!”There’s nothing wrong with my microphone today! But we can’t help but feel there’s something deeply wrong with us when we are forced to admit what we have been told is unthinkable, impossible, heretical and horrible:The Lord is not with us.Or so it feels if we are daring enough to be honest.I might even contend that until a Christian has said; meant; felt; prayed that unspeakable thought that must be spoken..… they may not even be a full follower of Jesus…The One who was and is God.The One who modeled for us how to live, how to pray, how to feel…The One who dared enough to be honest. The One who said, and I quote:“God, God . . . my God!Why did you dump me miles from nowhere?Doubled up with pain, I call to God all the day long.No answer.Nothing.”!Did you know that’s what the Almighty Jesus Christ said, felt, prayed on the cross? No answer.Nothing! It gets worse.Be sure you catch the condemning; the accusatory, angry, agnostic tone and tenor. The next two words must by necessity be read with all that volume and venom. If fact, the Bible specifically mentions that Jesus prayed this “in a loud cry.”He prays on:“And You!!Are You indifferent, above it all, leaning back on the cushions of Israel’s praise? We know You were there for our parents! They cried for Your help and You gave it; they trusted and lived a good life. And here I am, a nothing–an earthworm, something to step on, to squash.Everyone pokes fun at me; they make faces at me, they shake their heads:‘Let’s see how GOD handles this one; since God likes him so much, let him help him!’And to think You were midwife at my birth, setting me at my mother’s breasts! When I left the womb You cradled me; since the moment of birth You’ve been my God.Then You moved far away and trouble moved in next-door. I need a neighbor. “This graphic and earthy (and astoundingly accurate) rendering of Jesus’ prayer from The Message translation is stunning, shattering; and yet not as devastating as the original language portrayed it. Somehow the whole scene changes, and is dialed down; is in effect censored; through standard translations such as the NIV:PS 22:3 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;you are the praise of Israel.PS 22:4 In you our fathers put their trust;they trusted and you delivered them.PS 22:5 They cried to you and were saved;in you they trusted and were not disappointed.PS 22:6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people.PS 22:7 All who see me mock me;they hurl insults, shaking their heads:PS 22:8 He trusts in the LORDlink

Array-ne INCREASINGLY, legislation dealing with sex offenders is being passed that is punitive, untested, expensive and, in many cases, counterproductive — demonizing people who commit sexual offenses without offering any empirical information that the new laws will reduce sexually violent crime.Last week, for instance, New York became the 19th state to enact so-called sexually violent predator legislation. This legislation provides for the indefinite civil commitment of sexual offenders who have served their time in prison and are about to be released. The legislation was passed despite a lack of evidence that such laws actually reduce sexual violence and despite recent reports of warehousing and chaos in some programs and relentlessly rising costs in others. It is just one example of the kind of punitive laws being passed across the country. What’s more, we know that sexual crimes are devastating to victims and their families and that we must do all we can to protect ourselves from predators. But demonizing people rather than treating them makes little sense, and passing laws that are tough but mindless in response to political pressure won’t solve the problem either. The reality is that, despite the popular perception to the contrary, recidivism rates for sexual offenders are among the lowest of any class of criminals. The wife of a man who committed a hands-off crime involving possession of child pornography put it this way: Each of these horrendous crimes drives another nail into our coffin.Another reason for the demonization is that society has failed to fund research on the treatment and management of people convicted of sexual crimes — despite the fact that states are willing to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on unproven programs for treatment and containment. The current public discourse on sex offenders is, therefore, without a base of empirical studies.

We have been trying to establish exactly what it means when a students gets a C in the LEAP program and when a student gets an A in the LEAP program. You can see, the whole idea of assessment of students’ English language proficiency is much more complex than at first glance.Basically, the way we are envisioning the LEAP program is that a C means about Canadian Benchmark Level 8, and an A means Canadian Benchmark level 9. Because of our rubrics and interrater reliability studies we have been carrying out in LEAP 4, I can pretty much guarantee the same thing for the other teachers as well. There is one more piece of the puzzle that we had to consider when we were establishing exactly what the letter grades in the LEAP program mean. If students get an A in the LEAP program, that means they are excused from writing the Effective Writing test. But what does that mean? The effective writing test evaluates students as follows:SatisfactoryMarginally SatisfactoryMarginally UnsatisfactoryUnsatisfactoryThe LEAP program doesn have any mark that is equal to satisfactory in the Effective Writing Test. An A in the LEAP 4 writing class means that the student is marginally satisfactory according to the Effective Writing Test and is excused from the Effective Writing Test. However, a C in the LEAP program means that the student is Marginally Unsatisfactory in the Effective Writing Test.

I began this week thinking about Sam Harris’ critique of religion. I suggested we take Harris seriously insofar as he is a goad to get us to think afresh about the light and dark sides of religious belief. This week I’ve painted the dark side and now I want to start working toward a positive response to Harris. I want to begin with the greatest American psychologist, William James.A lot of philosophers are ambivalent about James’ legacy and pragmatism (James’ philosophy). But in my area of research–the psychology of religion–James remains a towering figure. This influence is mainly through his book THE VARIETIES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE.Looking back on our last few posts I want to use some of James’ approach in VARIETIES to deal with this question of belief.A common theme in my last four posts is the role of certainty in belief. One way to look at Harris’ critique is his complaint that religious fundamentalists are certain that they know something that non-believers do not. Further, in my post on moral conviction we saw how holding moral convictions can create group hostilities. Recall from that post that moral convictions are experienced as facts about the world. Again we see the role of certainty here. Further still, in my post on evil, we saw how, once people get moral justifications on their side, they can do some pretty horrible things. Not because they are evil, but because they are certain that they have good reasons for their behavior. Particularly if they start to feel victimized. Finally, we saw in my last post that people who hold different convictions other than my own are considered infrahumans. For example, perhaps these people don’t see the moral facts they way I do because they just aren’t as smart, or honest, or righteous as I am. That is, something must be wrong with those people. So, the way I see it, the root of the problem in religion is this conviction that I am in possession of the Truth. It is the certainty of religion that makes it dangerous. What I like about James’ pragmatism and the VARIETIES is his dismissal of very detailed metaphysical claims that can be known with any certainty. For example, what is the spiritual/metaphysical realm like? How many Gods are there? One, two, or a million? Are there angels? If so, how many? Are there demons? If so, what are their names? Is there a hell? If so, what exactly is it like? These questions roll on and on.What is problematic about religion is that there are people who, by reading a sacred book, claim to know IN GREAT DETAIL what that spiritual realm is like. Just like I can walk you through my house pointing out all the rooms, these people can take you on a tour of the metaphysical region as if they had lived there all their life.I have no problem with people BELIEVING the heavens are this way or that. But I do have problems with people claiming they KNOW how the heavens are configured. First, how can they know this? Second, once they KNOW, all the dark things of religion start to surface: I can kill/hate/dismiss you in THIS world because I know you’ve run afoul of how THAT world mandates life to be.My point is, none of us knows, with absolute certainty, how the spiritual realm is configured. And that lack of knowledge should make us humble. How does the VARIETIES fit into all of this? Well, in the VARIETIES James takes as his data the mystical experiences of religious people. The VARIETIES is mainly James’ categorization and analysis of religious mystical experience.I like James’ focus on mysticism because that is all I think we can claim as religious believers. Our faith is not built on personal tours of heaven and hell. No one I know has been on that side of the veil. No, all we get are encounters and hints. We get mystical experiences. I don’t mean having visions or hearing God’s voice, although that can be a part of it. For most of us the religious experience is just a feeling we’ve had, maybe only once in our life, that gave us the unmistakable feeling that something is out there. Almost every believer I know roots their faith in this kind of experiential substrate. They have sensed something. They haven’t seen it first-hand, but they think they have bumped into it. In the words of T.S. Eliot:These are only hints and guesses,Hints followed by guesses

This was delicious, but through the years I developed a preference for mixing the brown sugar and sour cream together and mixing it with the cut strawberries. Now that I’m not eating much sugar, I use Splenda Brown Sugar blend to make this and it’s delicious. I don’t like Splenda in large amounts, but in this dish I think the blend which combines Splenda with brown sugar gives the best of both worlds.Strawberries Romanof(4 small servings)1 pound fresh strawberries1/2 cup sour cream1 T Splenda Brown Sugar Blend, or 2 T brown sugar (or to taste, depending on how sweet you like it)Be sure to buy the reddest and ripest strawberries you can find for best flavor.

Array (found at the Journal board)Mineshaft #17It’s good to know that we’re living in a comics world where unique publications like Mineshaft can make it for seven years and seventeen issues, still retaining all of the flavor of a homegrown zine while boasting a high-powered lineup of contributors and enjoying distribution to bookstores and the Direct Market via Fantagraphics - it’s still editors/publishers Everett Rand & Gioia Palmieri in charge, the contents of each issue apparently dictated by whatever they find to be interesting among their correspondents’ things. That said correspondents are in large part legends of the classic underground scene makes each issue a treat for those interested in such an area of comics focus, though the focus here is definitely not only on comics. there’s a real ‘what we have been doing lately’ feel at work, a personal stamp that extends to what we get from the various storied names attached. This issue (64 pages, .95) is particularly heavy on sketchbook material, the feature attraction being 15 pages of unseen Robert Crumb, many of them complete comics, stuffed with nervous angst and queasy humor, not to mention a level of accomplished, seemingly effortless detail that surpasses so much of what’s worked over by other artists for ‘formal’ presentation. There’s also no surprise to run into an illustrated reminiscence by Bruce Simon on the days of 8mm and 16mm film clubs, or a series of 40 tips from Bill Griffith on comics creation (ranging from the nitty-gritty of which pen points and inks come recommended to permeating philosophy - “Cartoon characters have souls.”).

She said it would be unfair to deny the pension of someone who has served the public for 30 years if the official turned corrupt in year 31. If the state A.G.’s Office hadn’t been sitting on its hands and protecting its political friends, the number would be far higher. Jail time and loss of pension should be mandatory for corrupt politicians - regardless of whether they committed the offense the day after they were first sworn to office or 30 years later.

Why should it be any different that when real world events begin to turn the pages of Revelations that the world will once again be caught off guard? In the opening of the end times, the 4 horsemen of Conquest, War, Famine, and Death ride out together to kill one-fourth of the population of the world with the sword, famine, disease, and wild animals. As I look at the world I can see trouble in the Middle East, A coming war between Iran and Israel, The potential of nuclear terrorism here in America’s major cities, Famine and Aids in Africa and the ticking time bomb of Bird Flu in Asia and the Middle East. With war brewing, Famine would strike the world much harder if America’s ports were closed by fear of disease or nuclear terrorism. Wild birds are beginning to bring sickness and death to various parts of the world with no limit to their reach. This death of one fourth of the world is only the beginning of the horrors that await mankind as God cleanses this evil world of it’s sin. In light of this I’ve been strongly encouraging my family and friends to begin stocking up food, water, and medicine like Joseph did in Egypt so that in the hard times ahead they will not only be able to survive, but they will also be able to be a blessing to others. As Sars effected Hong Kong, so the Bird Flu could bring our American economy and even the World’s economy to a grinding halt; In 1918 a similar flu killed more people then all the deaths of World War One combined.

This will probably turn into a rambling post, but I’ll try to do my best.Bear, I’ve been running most of my solo runs this winter in the 8:00 to 8:30 range and have been known to run the first few miles at 9:00 pace before warming up. When I’ve run with others, we’ve probably run 7:00 to 7:30 pace. I still find it amazing, as I “struggle” with 8:30 pace that I can run 2:00 per mile faster for 13 miles. My (Daws’s/Lydiard’s) program actually takes into account running faster once you are confident that you can handle the mileage. I have started to sprinkle in some stronger paced runs and will continue to do so over the next few weeks, leading to a hill phase. As Lydiard says, you can “get there” with aerobic runs, it just takes longer than if you include the stronger paced runs.Yvonne, well I can only speak for myself and my experiences in this sport. He ran 2:57 on 55 mpw, 2:47 on 70 mpw and sub-2:40 on 100 mpw. I think I’m the type of runner that could run well just based on miles and strong aerobic runs. I was running 40-50 mpw and doing a lot of speed and ran 39:02 for 10k on a pancake flat course in ideal conditions.

Of the first 100 finishers this year, 33 of them ran last year. On average, for every person that ran 30 seconds faster this year, I found two people that ran 2:00 slower. To keep the statistical integrity of this very meaningful analysis intact, I threw out anyone whose time changed by more than 5 minutes over last year; including a guy that went from 1:30 to 1:19 – wow - and a guy that went from 1:18 to 1:29 – ouch.Since only a third of the first hundred finishers repeated from last year, I found it eerie how closely times and places corresponded from year to year. Jenna won by nearly 7.5 minutes, with a time of 1:21:20 or 24 seconds faster than last year.

After he retired from UCLA he began a project with the Templeton Foundation to assess spirituality in higher education - what are the attitudes of students and faculty to spirituality and religious experience? He then spoke from the heart - like many congressmen not in an especially polished way - but with real substance. He seemed like a great guy.We also presented an award to a friend from Massachusetts for his work in higher education lobbying. The award is named after a guy who worked in New York. My friend did not know him - his name was Henry (Hank) Paley. He then went on to a series of things that I would not have had the patience for - there is a federal advisory committee on student aid that Clare now chairs and a lot of minutae negotiated rule making.

Moving on, I failed to qualify for my Scuba Diving which mightily sucks, especially since the reason was that I had a bloody cold which stopped me from diving on the second day. And that leads me neatly onto the next item on my blogging checklist, which is to pimp Trocadero, a very cool band who have just released their debut album Roses are Red, Violets are Blue. Don’t let the rather trite name put you off, just take my high musical taste and buy it.

You drive through the difficult parts of life, a sort of cheerful determination on your face, because not only are you still happy, you’re ready to fix whatever inconveniences this event may have caused. You drive your own life with expectations that although are a bit high for my taste, you seem to be doing fine with–you have an amazing sense of self, and a knowledge of who you are and who you can be that I have never seen before. You are gorgeous, hilarious, gentle, tall, healthy, in all meanings of the word, silly, girly, playful, magnificently creative, indulgrently fashionable, real, intelligent, and a compassionate maternal figure to anyone who needs it.

Johnny Dowd’s new album Cemetery Shoes is due out October 5 on Bongo Beat Records. Dowd completists will undoubtedly already own a copy as it was released earlier this year in Europe on the Munich label. Johnny is also slated to do a US tour in November and December with Sally Timms of Mekons fame. Specific dates haven’t been announced yet.

The Handsome Family is also hitting the road again in late October. They’re heading to California, into the northwest and then zipping back across the country to the east coast, stopping in places like Minneapolis and Chicago en route.

Speaking of the Handsome Family, they appear in the recent film Searching for the Wrong Eyed Jesus along with such notables as Harry Crews, Jim White, and 16 Horsepower.

Just caught director Rory Kennedy’s documentary A Boy’s Life which is currently showing on HBO. The film deals with the custody battle over a seven year old boy with mental problems in the small Mississippi town of Eupora. One of the greatest lines in the history of southern cinema is delivered in this film when one of the main characters says something along the lines of Im gonna lose weight, get me some teeth, go back to school, and Im a gonna be somebody. I don’t know if this film will change your thinking about the mental health system or child custody issues, but it does provide a rare glimpse into the day to day life of rural Mississippians in the early 21st century. Kennedy’s earlier work includes the documentary American Hollow, which also resulted in a book of photographs by the same name.

Steven Spielberg’s first film Sugarland Express, was just released on DVD. The film lightheartedly deals with the true story of Illa Faye Dent who helped her husband Robert Samuel Dent escape from a Texas correctional facility (when he had just a few months left to serve) so that they could get their baby back from a foster family in Sugarland, Texas. The couple kidnapped a Texas state trooper and led law enforcement officials on a several hundred mile chase across Texas. Spielberg’s first outing is definitely no Vanishing Point or Two Lane Blacktop, but it’s not a bad little film that might make a good double feature with something like Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry.

From the backwaters of Idaho comes director Jared Hess’ Napoleon Dynamite, based on his earlier short, Peluca, which is slated to appear as an extra feature when this film is released on DVD. On the surface this film is a typical high school comedy with will he or wont he get the girl” being the basic thread in the plot. What Hess, along with co-writer/wife Jerusha Hess, has given us, though, is a much more intelligent film than that. Kooky sub-plots abound, but none of them are hammered into the ground like in many juvenile comedies. Knowing when to quit is one of the key elements in making an intelligent comedy and the Hesses do know when a gag has been spent and they wisely move on to the next thing. Many of the incidents in the film were based on events from the writers real lives. Extra points for filming the film locally in southeastern Idaho and using locals as extras.

London, Kentucky, is holding its annual World Chicken Festival again this year from September 23 to 26. But, sadly, Jerry Chicken Man Isaacs doesnt seem to scheduled to perform as he has in previous years. The story is that Jerry, a local bluegrass singer known for his very animated rendition of the tune “Red Hen Boogie”, is so good at imitating a chicken that hes been banned from participating in the chicken clucking contest since he obliterated the competition every year.
